Jazz Improvisation Ensemble
7/24—7/28, 12-2 pm (ages 13-18)
Ted Taforo. Five-day intermediate jazz group focusing on improvisation styles, technique, & confidence. ($219/5-day session)

When I first started improvising the most beneficial thing for me was to play with my friends! There’s something about playing in a structured and supportive environment which gives us energy to grow as improvisers. This workshop will focus on how to improvise with others and the exploration of jazz improvisational language. Through investigating jazz history, learning jazz repertoire as a group, and finding freedom within creative restrictions, students will gain tools to continually discover their own voice on their instrument. -Ted Taforo, Curriculum Developer and Instructor

Open improvisation exercises
Too often inexperienced improvisers are held back by the fear of making a mistake. Experienced improvisers are sometimes inhibited by too much information at their disposal. The intention here is to simplify the process by providing basic communicative and creative skills that will lay the groundwork for students to progress. In this portion of the workshop, students will be arranged in a circular formation and will be exploring the following exercises as a group to help access their own creativity: (these exercises will work with any instrumentation and experience level)
Eye Contact and Cueing Games, Storytelling, Limited harmonic structures, Strict note values, Improvising in simple forms, History/Listening

Genres
Pre-Jazz and Early 20th Century, Mid 20th Century, Late 20th Century, 80’s/90’s, 2000’s

Jazz Repertoire
We will learn a few of the following short form jazz pieces. These songs will be used as vehicles for us to explore the different improvisation techniques/games that were introduced in the “Open Improvisations” as well as a chance for students to play in the style of historically significant jazz artists that we discussed in the “Listening” portion of class. This also gives students a chance to explore their own improvisational tendencies and interests in the context of the jazz repertory.
Students will participate in the role of the soloist and accompanist as these pieces lend themselves to many possibilities in terms of instrumentation and arrangement.

Registration Deadline
To register, please contact 626.403.2300 or southpasadenamusic@gmail.com by Thursday, June 1, 2017.
